As of now (March 2011), Android 2.3 Gingerbread is the latest build and if you are looking to buy a phone you should make sure that it has at least Android 2.2 Froyo. If you find anything older like say 2.1, 1.6 or 1.5 – remove that phone from your wish list.

Some brands are more regular with device updates than others, from what I’ve read HTC is very regular in providing updates for your smartphone. Motorola and Samsung aren’t far behind.
